Grocery shopping used to be my favorite thing to do. Really. But lately the whole experience has become stressful. As I search the aisles, I'm torn: I've stopped eating meat, so I look for vegetarian options. I find them, but they're made up of white starches and loaded with cheese. I look for whole grain items, and they have unpronounceable ingredients. I look for organic produce but it's shipped in from Argentina. I look for local foods and they're not organic!
I keep telling myself I don't have to be perfect at this. Every mindful choice I make helps, even if I have a few mainstream staples. But again, all or nothing with me. The more I learn about the food industry, the more overwhelmed I feel with guilt and responsibility for, ummmm, the future of the entire world. Anyway, I ended up coming home with:
- organic stevia-sweetened cola (just to try)
- organic, free roam, grass-fed, Canadian milk
- frozen organic mixed veggies
- vegetarian spring rolls
- organic salsa
- local, free run, hormone-free eggs
- bag of Canadian apples
- 0% fat greek yogurt
- organic granola with coconut and dried apple
And I did "go nuts" and buy a zucchini flown in from Mexico.
For anyone who doesn't think I'm too much of a hippie to be credible, and would like to know more about their daily foods, I recommend checking out Food Inc. Actually, chances are you've seen it already! It's been out for quite a while, but I just got around to it last night. It certainly made me think. Maybe too much. But I still prefer learning about society than somewhat blissfully ignoring it. Makes me feel a little more in control of my life. Awareness is important. I think.
Paige read skinny bitch. I really think you'll love it. Leans heavy toward vegan.
